BUMP FRIENDLY VACATION STYLES
Whether you have a babymoon planned, or just want to survive the pregnancy in summer and look pulled together, these looks will have you covered. Having spent 2 of the last 3 summers pregnant in sweltering heat, I have learned a few things about dressing for pregnancy without buying maternity clothes. The few maternity things I did buy (a pair of jeans, a pair of cutoff shorts and a few work pants), I bought on Poshmark and re-poshed after I was done with them and broke even (win-win), but for the most part I wore non-maternity clothes. The key is sizing up 1-2 sizes depending on how far along you are, but the benefit is that many of those styles can be worn postpartum. Here are some things I look for when I’m shopping for “bump friendly” items.
Pull-On Elastic Waistbands: During pregnancy, comfort is key, and pull-on elastic waistbands become your best friends. Look for loose, flowy skirts or wide-leg pants with elastic waistbands made from breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. Pair these bottoms with lightweight, stretchy camisoles with an open button down, or loose-fitting tops to create a comfortable yet chic summer outfit.
Smocked Details and Empire Waists: Smocked tops or dresses are a fantastic choice for maternity wear as they provide a flattering fit and accommodate your growing baby bump. These garments are designed to stretch and adapt to your changing shape. Empire-waist dresses also work well, as they cinch just below the bust and flow freely over your belly. Choose lightweight fabrics with vibrant prints or pastel hues to embrace the summer vibe.
Knitted or Bodycon Pieces: Knitted dresses or bodycon silhouettes can be incredibly flattering during pregnancy, accentuating your beautiful curves. Opt for stretchy knitted dresses that offer enough room for your belly to grow while hugging your figure in all the right places. These dresses often come in a variety of lengths, from maxi to midi, allowing you to choose the style that makes you feel the most confident.
Belted Shirtdresses: Belted shirtdresses offer a polished and versatile option for maternity wear. Choose a style with a tie or a fabric belt that can be adjusted to accommodate your changing shape. These dresses can be dressed up or down and are perfect for both casual outings and more formal occasions.
Shirred Fabric Swimsuits: Maternity swimwear can be a challenge to find, but shirred Hunza G swimsuits are the gold standard of non-maternity swimwear in my opinion, and saved me during my pregnancies. They can be a bit of an investment, but they hold their shape incredibly well and can often be found on sale. The shirred design provides ample stretch and support for your growing bump, ensuring a comfortable and secure fit. Hunza G swimsuits come in a variety of styles, including one-pieces and bikinis, so you can choose the style that suits your personal taste. Pair them with a flowy kimono or a lightweight cover-up for a stylish beach or poolside look.
By exploring non-maternity clothing options like these, you can create a versatile and trendy maternity wardrobe that will still be useful after the baby is born. Opt for breathable fabrics, and prioritize comfort to stay cool and confident throughout your pregnancy. Remember, the most important thing is to feel comfortable and beautiful as you embark on this incredible journey. Enjoy the summer and celebrate your unique style!
